Holy Island

Holy Island was originally called Lindisfarne. St Aidan founded a Priory there in 635 AD and by the 11th Century the island had become the focal point for Christianity in the north of England. We will visit the remains of the Lindisfarne Priory and the visitor center which explains how the monks lived.

We will also visit the Lindisfarne Castle built in 1550 during the reign of Henry VIII to protect the island from attacks by the Scots.

In the nearby Parish Church of St Mary is a copy of the beautiful 8th century Lindisfarne Gospels. (The real ones are in the British Museum in London)

Lindisfarne Mead, once made on Holy Island by medieval monks, is currently produced at St Aidan's Winery. Free samples are available at the winery showroom.

More information on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne can be found on the official site.
